Casey McCormick Interviews Fiona Ingram, Author of The Secret of the Sacred Scarab

Casey McCormick caught up with Fiona Ingram to chat about her book, The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, self-publishing and a sequel!Hi Fiona! Please start off by telling us a little about yourself.
I come from a background of theater studies and journalism. My studies and love of travel have combined because after university I spent a year in London at drama school and a year in Paris studying mime. After a few years working in grassroots and community-based theater, I began to write more and gradually moved into journalism. Becoming a children’s author happened by accident after I went on a family trip to Egypt with my mother and two young nephews.

Podcast and Video: Dr Bill Branch on Discovering New Species and Conservation

If cold blooded creatures that slither and slide are your cup of tea, then Dr Bill Branch is your man. This intrepid explorer is quite an ace at discovering rare new species – in this case a chameleon and forest viper in Mabu. We posted an earlier article on the chameleon discovery but, now we bring you audio and video footage. Enjoy:Professor Bill Branch (Curator of Herpetology, Port Elizabeth Museum): Hunting chameleons at night is much easier than during the day because at night they sit out in the open, and they also bleach to a white colour. And that means they stand out in a torch light.
Because of the confined spaces within rainforests, many species such as this pigmy chameleon, evolve into dwarf versions.
DNA samples taken by Professor Branch verify that these pigmy chameleons are new to science.
Another dwarf version of a species Bill has described as new to science is this forest viper.
Bayworld reptile and amphibian expert Dr Bill Branch was part of a multi-national expedition that returned recently from northern Mozambique where they explored the remote granite mountain top and pristine forest of Mt Mabu.

Jenny de Klerk Reviews Wolfstorm by Ian Pugh
Although the characters in Wolfstorm fall a bit flat, according to reviewer Jenny de Klerk, there is action and adventure enough to make this book a carrot for 10-12 year olds.
There are lots of exclamation marks in this fast-paced adventure written by Zimbabwean author Ian Pugh. There’s not much characterisation, but plenty of action as Danny and his friends race from the future to the past, taking on time cops, time hogs and even Adolf Hitler.
Yes, you guessed it, they have a time machine. They have a really cool flying motorbike too. They also have some amazing futuristic game capabilities.

About the author
Chris van Wyk is the author of many books, amongst them poetry collections, children’s books, especially non-fiction for children. His delightful memoir Shirley, Goodness and Mercy about growing up in the Coloured township of Riverlea, Jhb, “is like eating dark chocolate – rich and bittersweet, and best when you savour it slowly, experiencing the richness as it melts in your mouth. His powerful writing is simple and clear, and the bright, bold characters in his book burst out of the pages” (the Write Co.).

Mostly Carrots: Daily Dispatch Reviews 5 Sports Books

Verdict: mostly carrots. It’s Troy Blacklaws’ Bafana Bafana wot gets the stick.ANY rugby fan will cherish this book [Mauled] on the Castle South Africa 2009 Lions series which took place throughout last year.
As a photographer I’m going to be biased right from the start and say it’s the images that made me grab this book faster than Victor Matfield or Bakkies Botha ever could – and hold onto it.
