Henrietta Rose-Innes has won the $5,000 SA PEN Literary Award, given annually for an unpublished short story in English from "writers not older than 40 years of age". The competition, presented in conjunction with banking giant HSBC, was judged by Nobel laureate JM Coetzee.
Rose-Innes's story will be published by New Africa Books, in a book that draws from the 20-plus stories that made the shortlist entitled African Pens - New Writing from Southern Africa 2007.
The winner of the $3,000 runner-up prize is "At the Sound of the Last Post" by Petina Gappah; and Stanley Kenani took the $2,000 third place slot with his story, "For Honour".
